Varnishing “Unseelie Court: Vanity”

The very first layer (out of what ended up being around 25 layers) of varnishing “Unseelie Court:  Vanity!”

Mostly I use Liquitex Professional acrylic gloss varnish.  I buy lint-free rags in bulk (the type meant for car detailing, waxing fancy boats, etc.)  and they’re great for varnishing – they are “loops” with no corners, the edges can’t fray, no lint.  That makes me only have to worry about stray cat hairs or errant Jasmine hairs 😉

I dampen the rags and do very thin, very fast layers of varnish on the panel.  I use a hairdryer on the layer once the water from the rag stops beading up and has evaporated to an even surface, and then once dry I start another layer, repeating until the whole piece has a consistent sheen.   It’s a long process, I sometimes envy other artists who use oil paint varnishes and just pour it right on, lol, but this is the way I’m used to and it works well.

The original painting is destined for the COREY HELFORD GALLERY’s 15th Anniversary show opening in April!
